The striking twin-towered gatehouse of the 14th century Donnington Castle is situated on a beautiful hilltop with magnificent views of Newbury and the surrounding villages. The large defences built to protect the castle during the English Civil War still survive today and historic guests are thought to include Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.
The spot is popular all year round for families, couples, history enthusiasts, dog walkers and those who just want to enjoy the scenery. It makes for a truly beautiful walk in all seasons, but this time of year is particularly pleasant as the leaves begin to change colour and the air becomes crisp.
If you fancy a brisk walk, the castle is just 15 minutes away from the hotel, easily found by following a path from outside our spa and health club. It makes for some spectacular photo opportunities (many of our couples choose to have wedding photos there) and a great place to stretch out on the grass and enjoy a picnic.
Should you prefer, you can also drive to the castle where there is an onsite car park that is open 7am-7pm daily – just use postcode RG14 2LE for your sat nav.
Happy exploring!
