The Living Rainforest

Home to 700 species of exotic plants and animals, you don’t have to travel far to experience the rainforest. Bucklebury Farm Park

Bucklebury, Newbury-  8 miles from Donnington Valley Hotel

Set in a stunning 74 acre grassland site, Bucklebury Farm Park is a great family day out in the fresh outdoors. Explore the woodland through guided nature trails and get up and close with the roaming animals that surrounded this beautiful farm.

In addition to the animals there are plenty of attractions for your children to enjoy and let off some steam, like go karting, the giant obstacle course and an indoor play area.

Opening times: Open daily from early spring to late autumn between 9.30am and 6pm. During winter months (November, December and January) the park is open from 9.30am until 5pm.

Marwell Zoo

Winchester, Hampshire- 35 miles from Donnington Valley Hotel

Home to over 100s of animals, Marwell zoo is the perfect destination to get up and close with wildlife. There are a variety of daily talks and animal feeds where kids can interact with the zoo keepers and meet the animals. Watch the penguins swim around their coves, sneak a peek at the meerkats and look up at the giraffes.

You can explore the 140 acre park on foot or alternatively you can take a train ride around the park.

The Discovery Centre

Bracknell, Berkshire- 31 miles from Donnington Valley Hotel

Let your mini explorers go wild and explore the nature reserve where learning and nature go hand in hand.  The discovery centre is surrounded by 1000 of hectares of protected woodland that is owned by the Crown Estate.

Once you’ve experienced the outside, there’s plenty to do on the inside. There are over 90 hands on activities including a science exhibition where your children can launch their own hydrogen rocket or send a huge hot air balloon skyward.

Milestones Museum

Basingstoke, Hampshire- 18 miles from Donnington Valley Hotel

Take a step back in time and learn what life was like historic Hampshire. As you walk through the historic cobbled streets you can remise about some of the old items you enjoyed as a child and share your memories with your children. You will also meet characters in costume along the way. For those children that like to get stuck in they can play in the Post Office and even dress up like a Victorian.

There’s even something for the adults, rekindle your childhood memories and visit the 1940’s sweetshop or enjoy a cold beverage in the Edwardian pub.

Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race

Kennet & Avon Canal

Held annually over the Easter Weekend since 1948, this race is a real spectacle and atmospheric occasion, with a severe test of skill and stamina for the participants. Being 125 miles long with 77 portages it ends in the tidal section of the River Thames. Boats will pass through Hungerford on Saturday 26th from around 2pm onwards.

This heartwarming play tells the romantic misadventures of a young English girl in New York in the exhilarating days of the 1980s. Brimming with optimism, she seeks success and love. But as she explores the city and her own mix of emotions, she starts to wonder whether she’s been looking for love in all the wrong places.

Originally conceived for television, this iconic musical, with a wonderful original score features songs such as ‘Unexpected Song’, the chart-topping ‘Take That Look Off Your Face’ and the title track ‘Tell Me on a Sunday’. It has been performed by many legendary musical theatre stars including Marti Webb and Sarah Brightman.

This breathtaking sight at Welford Park is enjoyed by thousands of visitors throughout the winter months. Over many years and generations, it has been tradition to open the grounds during February so that this wonderful spectacle can be viewed by all who want to see it. Famed to have beenplanted there by Norman Monks, the history also of this parkland is a wonderful learning experience.

After a bracing walk, you can revive at the Old Laundry Tea Rooms for a light lunch or homemade cake and a pot of tea, after which you can take a wander around the Snowdrops Gift Shop.

Northcroft Leisure Centre

This Championship Show is celebrating 25 years at the Northcroft Leisure Centre and Belgian Club’s centenary. Come and visit the show and see over 1,500 bantams as well as bantam ducks and over 200 plates of eggs. There will be more than 40 different bantam breeds present from Anconas to Yokohamas! Plus trade stands selling poultry supplies. Why not go along and admire the birds or learn about keeping poultry as a hobby. There’s something for everyone!

The Reading and District Bantam Society was founded in 1947 and exists to encourage those keeping bantams in the area. Originally centred on Reading it now covers quite a large area with members from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and further afield.

A magical place at Christmas, Bucklebury Farm is stunning: the holly is chock-full with berries, the tree is up in the barn and the fairy lights are shining bright. All this and Santa is here! He is dropping in every day to meet the children and check up on his reindeer who are right next door to his grotto and busy getting fed ready for the busy time ahead. A good part of our cultural heritage is based on wonderland, and artists, poets, writers and many others have used this theme for over a century. Among this heritage sits the complex history of the author Charles Dodgson, the quiet academic, and his better-known counterpart, Lewis Carroll – storyteller and innovator. This author dreamed up Alice Liddell’s fictional alter ego in the seminal storybook that has spanned generations.
In this evening, Professor Robert Douglas-Fairhurst uses previously unpublished material to bring the timeless legend of ‘Alice’ to light.

Wine Festival at The VineyardNewbury Open Studios 2015

2nd to 25th May

Set up in 1988, Newbury Open Studios is up and running for two weeks again this May. It is an ideal opportunity for you to visit the studios of the regions most prominent artists, see their latest works, talk to them about their processes and generally get your creative juices flowing.

Wolf Keeper Experience

7th May

Take advantage of this unique one-day experience to get up close and personal with wolves, including the new Arctic wolves.

On 7th May, the UK Wolf Conservation Trust has arranged for members of the public to learn more about these beautiful creatures. You will be able to help with aspects of care, shadow the keepers, see behind the scenes into the everyday life of wolves and their keepers, and see how the trainers encourage natural foraging behaviours. It is certainly one of the most unusual events in Berkshire this May. There will be plenty of opportunity for photographs, as well as added bonus of watching resident birds of prey such as kestrels, buzzards and kites.

Established in 1970 this is a small family run business. Painted in a traditional style and based in Kintbury ‘Kennet Valley’ offers both public and private charter cruises.

Public trips run from Easter to the end of September, operating seven days a week following a varied timetable. Trips last either 2, 2.5 or 3 hours and you can just hop on board if there are available seats but booking in advance is highly recommended.

This annual Open Day is a unique opportunity to see the racehorses in their training establishments throughout the Lambourn Valley – The Valley of the Racehorse. More than 25 yards are expected to open their doors providing visitors with a unique opportunity for a behind the scenes look at some of the country’s best racehorse training establishments. The yards will open from 8.30 am – 1pm and all money raised will go to The Lambourn Valley Housing Trust which works for the welfare of its stable staff, The Air Ambulance and other local needy causes.
