Joe Soap’s Masquerade! at Welford Park

30thJuly – 3 August – 7:30

2nd  August – 2.30

Commemorating The Great War, The Boxford Masques is the only play staged only in Berkshire and to have the community initiative to have a history stretching back over a 100 years. In the 19th century, Charlotte Peake established the annual midsummer celebration based on her own stories of nature and magic. These performances took place in natural places around Boxford but the beginning of First World War stopped the yearly tradition and it was not revived until 1988 when seven of Charlotte’s scripts were found. Since then, The Masques have expanded with over a thousand volunteers joining to perform from all backgrounds and have create five new musical theatre plays, 55 new songs and dances themselves. Children have also become a main part of the group with over 300 joining also.

This year’s production entitled’ Joe Soap’s Masquerade’ is about how the First World War impacted rural communities like Boxford. It is part of this year’s commemoration of the Great War and brings fresh perspective on that historic event.

The majority of the cast is under 25 and everyone involved attends over thirty workshops in drama, dance and musical performance, all led by leading professionals.

Tosca is set in Rome during the Napoleonic Wars where The malevolent villain, Baron Scarpia, Chief of Police, ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. Excaped political prisoner Cesare Angelotti, a supporter of Bonaparte’s invasion, takes refuge in his friend the painter Mario Carvadossi’s villa. Here they try and hatch a plan for Angelotti to escape from Rome whilst the singer Floria Tosca mistakenly believes her lover Cavaradossi is having an affair and is tricked into revenge by the evil Scarpia.

The open air performance of Tosca will be staged in front of the Grandstand at Newbury Racecourse.

Guests are very welcome to bring their own chairs and picnics to the event or sit on the grandstand steps or the artificial grass and picnic tables provided.

A licensed bar will be available on the first floor of the grandstand which will be open from 6pm when the gates open.
