Winter Skincare

As the weather has started to turn we through it would be a good idea to revisit a blog from Spa Director Hannah Henley with tips on how to keep your skin in tip top condition in the colder weather.

donningtonvalley:

Keep your Skin in Tip Top Shape

With the colder weather drawing in, it’s that time of year again to be thinking about how to try and avoid the inevitable winter skin blues.

Here are my top tips:

• If you use a cleansing wash or even cleansing wipes try and swap to a cleansing milk for the autumn and winter months to avoid stripping the skin

• When possible, use a moisturising face mask once or twice a week to top up the moisture levels in your skin

• Keep your legs scale free and smooth throughout the harsh autumn and winter by using a good exfoliator on a weekly basis, and then apply a body moisturiser daily or even a body butter to nourish the driest of skins

• Keep yourself hydrated. Keep up your fluids and look after yourself from the inside

• Start the day with a hot shower, but before you get out switch to cold water for about fifteen seconds. Then turn up the heat a little, and down again to repeat the process for about two minutes. I hear you say, why would I do a thing like that?

This is a simple hydrotherapy technique which revitalises the skin by stimulating the flow of blood through the body. It is both invigorating and highly beneficial to the skin. So even though you may not really enjoy the process, just think of the all the good it’s doing you!

• Use a facial moisturiser with an SPF as this will provide protection from all the elements

• Drink a glass of hot water with lemon. This Chinese herbal remedy is a sure-fire method of energising your body and will de-tox your entire system. This means that your body will be able to clean the blood faster to get rid of toxins responsible for bad skin

• Simply sleep! Money cannot buy the benefits of a good night’s rest. Your oxygen levels will drop if you don’t get enough sleep, meaning that your cells will not be renewed as quickly. This is when degenerative skin aging sets in. Try to get seven, if not eight or nine hours of rest a night to achieve absolutely painless benefits. It’s ideal!

Why not also pop down to the spa for a treatment and a bit of pampering?

Thalgo and Aromatherapy Associates

Thalgo and Aromatherapy Associates at Donnington Valley Spa

Over the past 2 years, Rachel Cattermoule, senior therapist and myself have taken it on ourselves to investigate the product industry for spas. A tough job, I hear you say. Well at some times it was certainly a challenge. We were on the hunt for product houses that gave our customers the wow factor, both in the relaxation and results.

After much searching we have selected two new product houses, which have just been launched and we are looking forward to hearing your feedback on these wonderful new treatments.

Aromatherapy Associates was launched in the early part of this year, a British company that are dedicated to sharing the positive benefits of essential oils as widely as possible. They take care of all aspects of physical and emotional wellbeing. Each of the mind and body products is expertly blended to target and treat every-day stress related symptoms, for results you can see and feel. Just showering with one of their fantastic oils leaves you feeling eased and wishing you found their products years ago!

With treatment names such as The Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience or Intense Muscle Release, you know you are both going to feel completely pampered and have all your stresses and strains eased away.

Our second product range, launched on 1st August is Thalgo. Created 48 years ago, Thalgo have worked to become the premier name in marine beauty. Harnessing the properties of the ocean and algae to create products that offer remarkable therapeutic and cosmetological action. We wanted to introduce a range of products and treatments that gave our clients the results they want as well as the completely pampered feeling.

With a selection of Rituals available taking you on a journey of ultimate relaxation there are pampering treatments for everyone. The Indoceane Ritual is an intoxificating spa ritual with a Mediterranean body exfoliation followed by an Ayervedic inspired massage using warmed oils and an ancient Indian technique. There is also a selection of facials for those concerned with the ageing process. The Silicium Firming and Lifting Facial, dares to defy time. A super lift facial designed to combat all the signs of ageing at 40+ after just one treatment you will already look 5 years younger.

The Thalgo range of products is vast offering body, face, sun, men, organic and nutrition.

Winter Sun

Tanning for the New Year

As the New Year begins and we start to feel the cold weather and notice our skins are losing any tan we had left over from the summer. There is no excuse to be tan free for the winter months as The Vita Liberata Tan is an easy answer yet offers lots of alternatives. You can take the easy option and pop to the Spa to get a tan and let one of the therapists do the Spray Tan for you.

  • In the Salon the Spray Tan is available in 3 shades and the therapist will discuss with you how you want your tan to look. Vita Liberata was the tanning range used in this years X Factor so is popular with the celebs and has been featured in the press recently.

The products deliver beautiful, naturally bronzed skin without the smell, streaks, sticky sensation and snakeskin fade often associated with products in this category. The products are 80% organic and enriched with moisture – lock complex Pentavitin. Ingredients include Melon, Grape and Silk Proteins The Vita Liberata Spray Tan is odourless and dries on contact. 80% organic and toxin free, to give the client and therapist comfort that this is the safest and kindest possible product of its kind on the market. The immediate result is very natural.

Before treatment advice:

  • Skin should be free from self tan, perfume, deodorant and aromatherapy oils.
  • Waxing or shaving should be completed at least 24 hours prior to the treatment or applying tan at home.
  • The evening or morning before your treatment or applying your tan, exfoliate your entire body, pay special attention to dry areas of your body such as hands, elbows, knees and feet.
  • It may be best to wear dark, loose fitting clothing with dark coloured underwear after applying the tan or having a treatment.

When scheduling your tanning treatment:
Please be advised of the following;

  • Do not shower or bathe for a minimum of 6-8 hours after your treatment.
  • Do not participate in any activity which may cause perspiration for at least 12 hours after the treatment.
  • The guide colour can be left on for up to 24 hours.
  • When showering the guide colour off, shower without product and allow the water to run completely clear.

Keep your tan looking gorgeous for longer:

Moisturise the skin with Moisture Boost Body treatment or Skin Plumping Peptide Mist. After showering pat the skin dry rather than rubbing. Avoid swimming as chlorine can bleach the tan.

There are tinted products which make applying self tan a lot easier, untinted (which saves any tan going on your clothes) or the Phenomenal Range, which means more than one application but the tan lasts 2-3 weeks. For the person that doesn’t want a heavy tan or has not tanned before gradual tanning products are fantastic, they are a moisturiser with a hint of tan, so you can apply it daily until you achieve the colour you want. For the last minute events you can use a wash off tan, instant colour and washes off when you get home.

Beauty Tips for the End of Summer

This year, we have been graced with another one of those summers, where if you blinked, you may have missed it. Hopefully some of you are looking for those post-summer holiday tips, so here are a few that will certainly help.

Painted Nails – One of our Favorite Accessories
Witchy Wisteria, Dased Dahlia and Hotter than Hibiscus by Jessica Cosmetics are fantastic nail colours from this season to help you to keep the feeling of summer going for a little longer.

If you struggle to keep your nail varnish in one piece, geleration is a fantastic option. GELeration from Jessica is the next generation of soak-off gel nail systems. Created with the health of natural nails in mind, this evolution in technology protects nails, offering weak, bitten or problem nails the opportunity to grow. They make for perfect nails for 2-3 weeks with long-lasting high gloss shine, giving a durable yet flexible non-chip finish which is instantly dry. For more information, visit http://www.donningtonvalley.co.uk/spa_handsfeet.asp.

Relieving Your Muscles – the Right Way
Most of us got into the Olympic spirit in some way or another – some have tried a new sport, some have set new fitness goals and others have found that watching sport on TV is just as addictive and enjoyable. Therefore, take some time out and give your body some me time and pamper yourself with the Espa Fitness Bath Oil, a warming sore muscle bath oil to ease aches and pains. A powerfully soothing essential oil bath blend to ease tired muscles and aching joints before and after exercise. Restorative Indian Bay and clove bud oils deeply warm and relax the body to relieve muscles, aches and pains. Lavender helps ease the mind, while sweet almond oil deeply nourishes for softer, supple skin.

ESPA is a line of products ranging from mud therapy to skin moisturisers both available to purchase or in form of treatments at the spa. An unusual combination of aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, thalassotherapy and phytotherapy create a philosophy focused on enhancing an individual’s lifestyle in a way that is both holistic and versatile. Visithttp://www.donningtonvalley.co.uk/spa_espa.asp for the full list of treatments and products offered.

Keeping Some Sun All Year Round
If you are feeling like the summer sun has not given you that glow you need, try topping up your tan with a self tan. If you are a confident home tanner, then a self tan milk or cream is perfect. Alternatively there are tanning sprays on the market which make the application a lot quicker and easier, if the colour is the concern and you do not want to go too dark, try a gradual tanning product. It allows you to top it up when you want. If attempting to tan yourself is still giving you doubt, then book a Spray Tan at our spa:http://www.donningtonvalley.co.uk/spa_selftan.asp.

Christmas Members Event

Donnington Valley Health Club & Spa held a Christmas Members Evening in November welcoming all members, friend & relatives to the Spa.

A wonderful display of individual stalls were present with products such as GHD, ESPA, Jessica nails, designer hand bags, jewellery and traditional Christmas gifts. Everything you could have wished for to kick start your Christmas shopping.

All staff were on hand to provide advice on gifts displayed. The Spa was decorated beautifully for the festive season with the large Christmas tree taking centre stage. The ambiance at the Spa was truly magical. Hannah Henley, Spa Director said: “I am so pleased that so many members and friends were able to make it today, it has been very successful. We’ve had really great positive feedback from so many members and non-members who attended, and I’m looking forward to planning the next event.”

The Plank

When preparing for a holiday we know that everyone wants to look their best! The best abdominal exercise to get that tummy into shape is the plank. This not only works the top part of your tummy muscles but also the lower abdomen.
There is no need for any equipment this exercise can be done in your own home.

Follow the steps below and you will soon see the results.

The PlankFirst of all if you have any injuries or back problems consult your doctor first.
Start off on the lower options and as you practice you will be able to up your game.

  • Lie on a mat tummy down on the ground.
  • Bend your arms and bring them underneath your body lifting your chest and upper back off the ground.
  • If you’re a beginner leave your knees and legs on the mat. Keep your back flat and hold in your abs and bottom. Hold this position for as long as possible and then repeat.
  • Plank higher intensityTo add a higher intensity, bring your body up onto your toes into a plank position. It is extremely important to keep your body flat and not to let your bottom go up or let your hips drop.
Hold this position for as long as possible and then repeat.

Spa Breaks

A Spa Break with just that little bit more time to focus on you!

Being a mum is rewarding but hard work. You feel as if there is never any time just for you. Even thirty minutes to sit quietly alone and read a magazine or relax in a bath, appears to be simply a dream. If at times, the thought of sitting on a busy train, have a coffee and read the paper would seem like a treat you need to read this.

Imagine escaping from home for twenty four hours, arriving at a 4-star country hotel. Awaiting, one of the top rated spas in the country, with luxurious facilities including an 18m swimming pool, sauna, steam and aromatherapy rooms.  Picture yourself in one of the the relaxation areas, choosing a treatment from a menu of therapies. Top it all up by attending two seminars during your stay, designed to spend time focusing on you and empowering you to leave with a renewed outlook and focus:

The ‘time out for me’ seminars

Who am I and where am I going?

  • Learn how to rediscover your personal values, your strengths and what your true passions are in life (other than your family of course!) and how these may have changed since having children
  • We will spend time helping you to think about your own personal vision for your life. Having a powerful vision can help you succeed far beyond where you’d be without one. That vision can propel you and inspire you going forward in your life.  If you don’t identify your vision, others will plan and direct your life for you so take some time out now so you are not one of those many people who too late in your life says, “If only… .”

My image

  • How we look has a huge impact on the way we feel about ourselves!  Find out why personal image is so important and discover which colours and styles suit you best, and why.
  • This session will help you re-evaluate your wardrobe, so that you can look great every day with minimal effort! A colour and image session where you will learn exactly what colours suit you best and why.

Not only will you be relaxing on a spa weekend, you will also be making the most of this precious time away and spending some constructive time being able to focus on YOU!  You will come away feeling refreshed, reinvigorated and re-motivated to return home and be the best Mum you can be.

If this sounds like a dream come true then take a look at this… that dream can be a reality, because we have designed this exact experience for you!http://www.donningtonvalley.co.uk/spa_breaks.asp

Pastels are in!

For many, makeup plays a very important role in their appearance. With so many products and types on the market it is difficult to get the right look. As this seasons trend is pastels getting the right colour for your skin tone is vital. Below are our top tips for getting this season’s look just right.

Tips for 2011

  • Using bright wholesome colours is great, as they can adapt to any outfit and any age.
  • Applying warmer colours to the eye can brighten up the complexion, creating a soft look perfect for the spring into summer season.
  • Blue, green, pink, orange, gold and red are the key colors this season. Why not try a couple and see which ones suit your skin tone best.
  • For a subtle look for the daytime, use a lighter colour eye shadow and combine this with a bronzer for the face and a clear lip-gloss to finish.
  • For a stronger more defined look, you could play around with eyeliners and bold colours such as hot pink, orange or red. Red lipstick has always been in fashion and if used well can be the perfect touch to your outfit for a sophisticated look.
  • Another important thing to remember with makeup is to make sure it is applied correctly. If you are not sure how to apply the latest trend pop down to Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa for a makeup to go session where you can get tips on application.http://www.donningtonvalley.co.uk/spa_essentials.asp
