What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a form of massage that focuses on the reflex (pressure) points of the feet. It is based on the ancient Chinese belief that energy flows around the body and by applying pressure to the reflex points energy flow can be improved and energy blockages can be released. It is also believed that the foot is a map of the body and different areas of the foot relate to different organs and areas of the body.

Forms of foot massage have been used by healers in many ancient societies from China, Japan, India to Egypt and modern reflexology was introduced to the UK in the 1960s. Although it is still not fully understood or scientifically proven how it works, the treatment can be very helpful in promoting health and wellbeing.

Reflexology is a very relaxing treatment and some people find it can help to relieve pain and a variety of health conditions. It is thought that reflexology can help the body to heal itself.

What happens in a treatment?

Your first treatment will include time for a full health consultation to make sure that you are able to have a reflexology treatment. There are some occasions when we will need to ask for a GPs approval before we can treat a client.

The treatment lasts for about one hour and starts with a relaxing foot and lower leg massage before the reflex points are stimulated. Some reflex points can feel sensitive or even slightly painful as they are being worked on.

How often should you have a treatment?

Regular treatments will help you more than a one-off treatment. One or two treatments a week is ideal but no more frequent than that.

After your treatment
To gain the most benefit from your treatment, try to follow this advice:

  • relax for the rest of the day/evening.
  • eat lightly and avoid heavy meals and alcohol
  • avoid strenuous activity or exercise

As reflexology stimulates all the body systems you may find you are more thirsty or need to go to the toilet more frequently. Some people find their sleep can be disturbed.
